
In previous years, all Alberta residents had to renew their vehicle licenses simultaneously—by the end of April. Plates could be purchased for two months prior to the expiry date; however, numerous people waited until the last moment to update them, resulting in extremely long lines stretching over multiple city blocks towards the month’s close. A Calgary Herald author humorously referred to these procrastinators as part of a "last-minute club." This reference appeared in an article among others spotlighted by Norma Marr, a former Herald researcher who gathered various archived pieces for what was known as the H Files.
