A seemingly easy time-saver like washing your bath mats with towels might lead to costly repairs amounting to hundreds of dollars. Household appliance specialist Scott Flint warns that this practice can potentially ruin your washer irreparably.
Speaking to the Daily Mail Flint, with more than three decades of expertise in appliance repair, cautioned that damp bath mats can become extremely heavy, exerting hazardous strain on the machine during spin cycles.
Contemporary washing machines have the capability to rotate at speeds of up to 1,200 revolutions per minute, making even minor unbalance issues quite significant.
Bath mats, due to their ability to absorb significant amounts of water, may cause an imbalance in the washing machine and put stress on important internal components.

“You risk blocked motors and damaged bearings,” says Flint. “A motor repair alone can cost around €227.87, while fixing or replacing the rear bearing, also known as the spider mount, can set you back around €402.”
In the most adverse situation, a single overburdened cycle might result in damages amounting to almost €500.
Alert Signals and How to Respond
If your appliance starts making unusual noise during the spin cycle, Flint suggests this might indicate damage to the rear bearing—and it’s crucial to take action promptly to prevent further issues.
His recommendation? Leave bulky items such as bath mats for professionals at a laundromat, since their machines are designed to manage heavier loads effectively.
Although it might appear as an inconvenience, it has the potential to prevent a expensive repair down the line.
Simply because something fits into your washing machine does not necessarily mean it should be placed inside. Although bath mats might seem innocuous, they have the potential to turn into one of the costliest things to clean improperly.
